October 20, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma freshman Andrew Harris claimed his first tournament victory at the USA F27 Futures in Mansfield, Texas.

The freshman knocked out Dennis Nevolo in 6-4, 7-6 (5).

“Andrew got off to a slow start today but kept his composure and was able to pick his level up in the middle of the first set,” OU associate head coach Bo Hodge said. “He has a bright future ahead of him. To win any tournament is difficult but to win a professional tournament has to be one of the greatest moments of his young career.”

Harris’ teammates continued playing in the men’s singles main draw at the ITA Regionals Sunday.

Axel Alvarez eliminated Drake’s Ravi Patel 6-3, 6-4. The junior then faced teammate Nick Papac in the quarterfinals, ousting Papac 7-6 (1), 6-2. Alvarez plays Patel’s Drake teammate, Matt Frost, in Monday’s semifinals.

Dane Webb defeated Oral Roberts’ Fabian Zierleyn 6-3, 6-0 in the third round. The junior clinched his spot in the semifinals after beating Nebraska’s Dusty Boyer 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Webb battles Drake’s Ben Lott Monday.

Doubles play also resumed Sunday.

Guillermo Alcorta and Alvarez beat Oklahoma State’s Brady Bohrnstedt and Sebastian Sachs 8-6 in the quarterfinals. After capturing four straight victories Alcorta and Alvarez’s doubles run ended in the semifinals, where they fell to Minnesota’s Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg.

Austin Siegel and Dane Webb also advanced to the semifinals after defeating Arkansas’ Manfred Jeske and Mike Nott 8-4. However, the tandem fell to Drake’s Robin Goodman and Ravi Patel 8-7(5).
