Sooners Shine in Tulsa

NORMAN, Okla. – Five Sooners advanced to the second round in the men’s singles main draw at the International Tennis Association’s Regional Championships Friday.

Junior Dane Webb faced instate rival Oklahoma State’s Brady Bohrnstedt in the first round, and ousted the Cowboy in straight sets 6-1,6-2. Webb takes on Iowa’s Matt Hagan in the second round.

Austin Siegel battled Parker Lawley of South Dakota State, eliminating him in consecutive sets 6-2,6-1. Siegel plays Arkansas’ Mike Nott Saturday.

Axel Alvarez also dropped his opponent in straight sets Friday. The OU sophomore ousted Western Illinois’ Christoph Haertel 6-1, 6-3. Alvarez also faces a Razorback, Manfred Jeske, in the second round.

Freshman Alex Ghilea played Nebraska’s Andrew Dzulnsky in his first match in Tulsa. After falling in the second set 4-6, Ghilea came back and defeated Dzulnsky 6-4, 4-6,6-1.  Next, Ghilea competes against Oklahoma State’s Vasili Capri.

Nick Papac was the second Sooner to defeat an Oklahoma State Cowboy Friday. The junior ousted Sebastian Sachs 7-6(3), 7-6,(5). Papac plays Arkansas’ Jovan Parlic in the second round.

The ITA Regional’s doubles main draw also continued Friday.

Austin Siegel and partner Dane Webb ousted Creighton’s Elliot Baker and Brandon Lee 8-4 in the second round. The pair takes on Michal Kianicka and Jonny Rigby of Southern Illinois-Carbondale in the third round.

Alex Ghilea and Nick Papac eliminated Drake’s Ben Lott and Euan McIntosh 8-7(4). Ghilea and Papac battle Oklahoma State’s Vasili Caripi and Lucas Gerch Saturday.

OU’s Spanish tandem, Axel Alvarez and Guillermo Alcorta, beat Johan den Toom and Jacob Herndon of Arkansas en route to the third round. The pair also faces rival Oklahoma State Saturday as they take on Trevor Horstman and Jacob Herndon.
