October 02, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. -- Sooners litter the main draws at the ITA All-American Championship after singles and doubles qualifying rounds completed Wednesday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa.

Dane Webb and Andrew Harris reached the doubles main draw after defeating East Tennessee State’s Diego Nunez and Rogerio Ribeiro 8-2 in the Wednesday’s third round of qualfying.  The Sooner duo then ousted South Carolina’s Tsvetan Mihov and Thiago Pinheiro en route to a main draw appearance where they will face another Gamecock tandem, Chip Cox and Kyle Koch Thursday.

Axel Alvarez and Guillermo Alcorta also reached the final qualifying round in doubles, but fell to UTSA’s Diogo Casa and Yannick Junger 8-5.

Alvarez is one of three Sooners who will play in the main draw of singles. The OU sophomore beat Duke’s Raphael Hemmler 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 in the third and final qualifying round.  Alvarez joins Alcorta and Webb, who were automatic qualifiers to the main draw based on last year’s performances.

OU newcomers reached the late qualifying rounds, but weren’t able to advance.

Sophomore transfer Austin Siegel and freshman Alex Ghilea ended their doubles run in the third qualifying round, losing to Florida’s Mike Alford and Florent Diep 8-6.

Freshman Andrew Harris lost in the third qualifying round of singles to Alabama’s Daniil Proskura in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Ghilea’s singles run ended in the fourth qualifying round, dropping to Georgia’s Austin Smith 6-3, 7-6 (4).
