NORMAN, Okla. -- With a three-round 857 (-7), the University of Oklahoma men’s golf team won the season-opening Golfweek Conference Challenge by four strokes over Virginia Tech. The three-day, 54-hole event featured 15 teams from 15 different conferences and was played at the 7,301-yard, par-72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa.

The Sooners, who are No. 19 in the preseason Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, shot a 1-over 289 in the final round, which featured a shotgun start. Individually, four Sooners finished in the top 13 out of 75 competitors.

The win is the fifth for OU under head coach Ryan Hybl and the first since the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational last February.

“The boys played great this week,” Hybl said. “Our consistency from start to finish was great because we never had a guy shoot more than 2 over par. We didn’t play great today, but we did enough to get the job done.”

Max McGreevy led the way for OU and concluded his first collegiate event in a tie for fifth place with a three-round 213 (-3), three strokes behind event winners Stewart Jolly of LSU and Scott Vincent of Virginia Tech. The freshman fired a 1-under-par 71 and made four birdies Tuesday.

“It’s always nice to have a young freshman come out and perform well in his first tournament, and McGreevy did that,” Hybl said.

Junior Charlie Saxon recorded four birdies en route to a final-round 70 (-2). His total score of 214 (-2) earned him a share of seventh place, his highest career finish in a team event.

Sophomore Beau Titsworth, senior Michael Schoolcraft and junior Michael Gellerman all carded a 2-over-par 74 score on the final 18 holes.

For Titsworth, the tie for 10th place marked the best showing of his career, the previous being a tie for 12th place at the Border Olympics last spring. Titsworth carded a 54-hole score of 215 (-1) and pocketed a team-high five birdies in the final round.

With an event total of 216 (E), Schoolcraft claimed a share of 13th place, and Gellerman’s 2-over 218 placed him in a tie for 24th.

The Sooners will return to action Sept. 29-30 when they compete in the Jack Nicklaus Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
