NORMAN, Okla. -- After securing a 3-and-2 victory Thursday afternoon, University of Oklahoma men’s golf senior Michael Gellerman has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships (APL). The tournament is being played at the 7,365-yard, par-71 Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan.

Gellerman defeated Jon Veneziano of Mount Dora, Fla., 3-and-2, in the third round of match play to secure his spot in the quarterfinals. It was his second match play victory of the day after topping Patrick Beyhan of Albuquerque, N.M., in the Round of 32, 4-and-3.

“It was a fun day, but it was also very intense. It was a grind all day long for me,” Gellerman said.

Gellerman, whose hometown of Sterling, Kan., is just an hour from Sand Creek Station Golf Course, was the only Kansan from the 156-competitor field to make match play. He said competing near his hometown has been an advantage.

“It’s nice to play close to home because it gives me some sort of comfort,” Gellerman shared. “It’s great to sleep in my own bed and eat my momma’s cooking.”

The APL is one of 13 individual national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The tournament winner will play in the 2015 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.

“USGA Championships are the most prestigious events we can play in as golfers, and Michael has put himself in a great spot,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “He is a tough match play golfer, and we are cheering him on.”

The quarterfinal round is slated to begin at 7 a.m. CT on Friday. Gellerman will face the University of Louisville's Robert Geibel, who is from Pembroke Pines, Fla., as he looks to advance to semifinal action Friday afternoon. The event’s championship match will be played on Saturday.
