NORMAN, Okla. -- Following a 1-up loss in semifinal action, University of Oklahoma men’s golf senior Michael Gellerman’s impressive run at the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships (APL) came to a close. The event is being played at the 7,365-yard, par-71 Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan.

Gellerman fell to Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights, Ill., who will be a freshman at Texas this fall. After hole No. 12, Gellerman led by 3 up, but Ghim won four of the last six to grab the victory. Earlier in the day, Gellerman defeated the University of Louisville’s Robert Geibel from Pembroke Pines, Fla., 1 up, in a quarterfinal match.

"It was a great week. It was fun making the run, and it hurts that it ended poorly," Gellerman said. "But that's how sports and life go sometimes."

Gellerman, whose hometown of Sterling, Kan., is just an hour from Sand Creek Station Golf Course, was the only Kansan from the 156-competitor field to make match play.

The APL is one of 13 individual national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The tournament winner will play in the 2015 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
