HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Through a round and a half of play at the NCAA Championships, the University of Oklahoma men's golf team sits in a tie for sixth place in the 30-team field. The tournament is being played at the 6,948-yard, par-70 Prairie Dunes Country Club.
The first round of the event began Friday, but 15 teams, including No. 13 seed OU, did not tee off due to a total of eight hours and 10 minutes of rain delays. Teams with rounds in progress completed them Saturday morning, and OU teed off at 11:10 a.m. CT. After completing their first 18 holes, the Sooners jumped right into the second round of play, which was halted at 8:30 p.m. due to darkness.
The Sooners, who are making their fourth straight NCAA Championships appearance and 35th overall, carded a 273 (-7) in Saturday's first round, their second-lowest score of the season. With all fives Sooners through at least 11 holes, OU is at 1 over par for the second round.
After 54 holes of stroke play, the top eight teams will advance to match play in order to determine the national champion. Only six teams have completed two rounds, while 15 have yet to start the second 18 holes.
Currently, No. 3 seed Stanford sits atop the leaderboard with a two-round 548 (-12) after recording a second-round 267 (-13). No. 1 seed Alabama and No. 22 seed South Carolina are tied for second at 8 under par, No. 21 seed Auburn is in fourth at 6 under and No. 24 seed SMU comes in at fifth with a 5-under-par score. The Sooners are tied with No. 2 seed Oklahoma State and No. 15 seed LSU.
After firing a career-low 65 (-5) in the first round, Charlie Saxon was tied for second place. The junior opened the round with a bogey on hole No. 10 but carded seven birdies to just one bogey the rest of the way, including birdies on holes No. 6, 7 and 8. Through hole No. 12 in the second round, Saxon sits at even par and is tied for third place, one stroke off the lead.
Tied for 15th place are sophomore Beau Titsworth and junior Michael Gellerman. In the first round, Titsworth tallied a 3-under 67, good for a tie for ninth place, while Gellerman carded a 1-under-par 69 to sit in a tie for 30th.
Titsworth recorded six birdies in the first round and has posted a 1-over-par 51 through 13 holes in the second. With 11 holes complete, Gellerman is at 1 under, bringing his tournament total to 110 (-2). The junior played a clean first round, shooting three birdies to two bogeys, and has tallied one birdie and no bogeys so far in the second.
Freshman Max McGreevy carded a 2-over 72 for the first 18 holes and has shot a 57 (+3) through hole No. 14 in the second round, placing him in a tie for 111th place. Senior Michael Schoolcraft struggled in the first round, shooting an 85 (+15). With 12 holes complete in the second round, Schoolcraft has shot a 5-over 51, placing him in 156th.
OU head coach Ryan Hybl said he is pleased with the performance of his squad so far.
"It was a long day on the course, but the guys did a great job all day," Hybl said. "We need to finish strong tomorrow morning and then see what happens with the weather. Charlie (Saxon) played one of his best rounds ever this morning, and that was fun to see. Overall we had a great day, and I am proud of our effort."
The Sooners will tee off to complete their second round of the NCAA Championships starting at 7 a.m. CT on Sunday. The 15 teams who have yet to start second-round action will do so Sunday, followed by the beginning of third-round play as weather permits. Live results will be available at NCAA.com.
