NORMAN, Okla. -- A trio of University of Oklahoma men’s golfers were named to the PING All-Central Region Team for their performance during the 2013-14 season, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Thursday.
Senior Michael Schoolcraft, junior Michael Gellerman and junior Charlie Saxon, who have competed in all 12 of OU’s team events this year, all received the honor for the first time in their careers. The three all-region selections are the most for the Sooners under head coach Ryan Hybl, who started at OU in the 2009-10 season. A total of 157 NCAA Division I golfers across six regions were recognized.
In his final season for the Sooners, Schoolcraft has tallied three top-five and six top-20 finishes. His 72.76 (+1.32) scoring average is second best on the team, and he has shot three rounds in the 60s. At the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas, Nev., Schoolcraft fired a 3-over 219 to tie for second place, his career-best showing.
Gellerman leads the team with a career-low 72.30 (+0.86) scoring average, an improvement from his 74.43 (+2.83) mark from a year ago. The Sterling, Kan., native has tallied three top-five finishes and team bests for top-10 and top-20 showings with five and eight, respectively. In April, Gellerman recorded his first career victory at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic with a 204 (-6).
Saxon fired a career-low 206 (-4) at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, tying him for fourth place, his best finish in a team event. The junior has two top-five, four top-10 and seven top-20 finishes this season as well as six rounds in the 60s. His 72.81 (+1.38) scoring average is third best for the Sooners.
OU will begin play at its fourth consecutive NCAA Championships on Friday, with tee times starting at 2 p.m. CT. Live results will be available on GolfStat.com.
