NORMAN, Okla. -- After the first round of the NCAA Eugene Regional, the 19th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team is in second place with an even-par 280. The three-round, 13-team tournament is being played at the 6,990-yard, par-70 Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
The Sooners, who are competing as the No. 3 seed, sit four strokes behind No. 1 seed and fourth-ranked Stanford. Tied for third are No. 4 seed South Carolina and No. 9 seed North Florida with 6-over 286s. Host and No. 7 seed Oregon is in fifth with a 289 (+9).
The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the 30-team NCAA Championships, slated for May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
Sharing sixth place are junior Michael Gellerman and sophomore Beau Titsworth. Gellerman played a clean round, shooting three birdies in a row on holes No. 11, 12 and 13 to just two bogeys for the day. On the par-5 hole No. 6, Titsworth recorded his team-best sixth eagle of the season and also added five birdies in the round. The pair is three strokes off leader Patrick Rodgers of Stanford.
With 1-over 71s, senior Michael Schoolcraft and junior Charlie Saxon are tied for 14th place. Saxon carded four birdies in the round, while Schoolcraft pocketed five to counteract five over-par holes.
Max McGreevy struggled early, shooting 8-over for the front nine, before bouncing back with a 1-under mark to close the round. The freshman finished the day with a 77 (+7), placing him in a tie for 60th.
OU head coach Ryan Hybl said he is pleased with the way his squad played for the first 18 holes.
"We played a solid round today, and I am really proud of our start," Hybl said. "We have two more rounds to go, though, and we need to keep it up. Schoolcraft got as much out of his round as possible, and Beau and Gellerman had really good rounds."
The Sooners will be paired with Stanford and South Carolina for Friday's second round and will tee off at 11:15 a.m. CT. Live stats will be available at GolfStat.com.
