NORMAN, Okla. -- The NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee selected the University of Oklahoma men’s golf team on Monday morning as the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Eugene Regional. The tournament will be played May 15-17 at the 6,990-yard, par-70 Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
The Sooners, ranked 19th nationally, will make their fourth straight regional appearance and 42nd postseason appearance in school history.
The 13-team, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Oregon, is one of six NCAA Regionals. It will feature 18 holes a day and serve as a preliminary event for the NCAA Championships finals. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals, slated for May 23-28 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
"We are excited about our site selection, and Eugene Country Club is going to be great from what everyone I have talked to has said," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "It is tight and a position golf course. We are going to have to play great golf to get through to the NCAA Championships finals, and we are excited for the challenge."
NCAA regionals will also be held in San Antonio, Texas; Raleigh, N.C.; Auburn, Ala.; Columbia, Mo.; and Sugar Grove, Ill. A total of 81 teams and 45 individuals were chosen for regionals.
Other Big 12 teams who qualified for a regional are Oklahoma State (No. 1 seed, Columbia), Texas (No. 3 seed, Auburn), Baylor (No. 5 seed, Eugene), Texas Tech (No. 7 seed, Raleigh), Iowa State (No. 9 seed, Columbia) and TCU (No. 9 seed, San Antonio).
Hybl's squad is coming off a seventh-place finish at the Big 12 Championship in Trinity, Texas. This season, the Sooners have secured three tournament wins, matching a program best.
Last season, the Sooners advanced to the NCAA Championships finals for the third straight year and the 34th time overall by finishing fifth following a playoff on the 18th hole against South Florida in the Tallahassee Regional in Tallahassee, Fla. At the national tournament in Atlanta, Ga., OU took 11th place for the second straight season.
