NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma men's golf junior Michael Gellerman has been named to the 10-member 2014 All-Big 12 team, the conference announced Thursday.
This season, Gellerman has shown significant improvement from his sophomore campaign. He has played in all 11 team events, posting a team-best 72.35 (+0.79) stroke average, as compared to a 74.43 (+2.83) mark a year ago.
At the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, held April 7 and 8, Gellerman grabbed his first career victory with a 6-under-par 204, a career-low 54-hole total. The Sterling, Kan., native has carded seven rounds in the 60s this season, including a career-best 66.
In 2013-14, Gellerman has recorded one win, three top-five finishes, four top-10 finishes and seven top-20 finishes.
"It's an honor for me, and I am just blessed to have been given the opportunity to represent OU," Gellerman said of his first selection to the All-Big 12 team. "After a disappointing sophomore year, I feel as though I have matured and learned how to better handle struggle, therefore making it more possible for me to have success. I just want to thank my family, friends, coaches and support system because without them, none of this would be attainable."
OU head coach Ryan Hybl said Gellerman has been solid throughout the season.
"Michael did a really good job for us this year, and I know his expectations are still really high for the postseason," Hybl shared.
The team was identified using the highest-ranked golfers according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the Big 12 Championship.
The Sooners will return to the course for an NCAA Regional on May 15-17. The selections for the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship will be announced starting at 9 a.m. CT on Monday, May 5, live on the Golf Channel. The Selection Show will also stream live at GolfChannel.com.
