NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men’s golf team will compete at the three-day, 54-hole Erin Hills Intercollegiate Sunday through Tuesday in Erin, Wis. The 14-team event will be played at the Erin Hills Golf Course, which is hosting its first-ever collegiate event and will be the site of the 2017 U.S. Open.

The 10th-ranked Sooners are coming off a season-opening victory at the Golfweek Challenge on Sept. 17 and a runner-up finish at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational on Sept. 30. Although his team has posted strong finishes, OU head coach Ryan Hybl hopes this weekend will provide the Sooners a chance to clean up some aspects of their game.

“Each guy has been able to go back after each event and say, ‘There’s a lot of opportunity for me to get better,’” Hybl explained. “I’m hoping that all these guys look that much cleaner in this tournament because for one, the golf course is going to be hard. Also, the weather is not going to be great since it’s going to be cold. It’s going to be a tough test, and that means we are going to have to come out with sharp games.”

The Erin Hills Intercollegiate features five teams ranked in the Golfweek top 50. The tournament is a really solid one, according to Hybl, who said the course was a major draw in attending the tournament.

“One of the reasons we are going to this event is because the golf course is supposed to be unbelievable,” Hybl. “They hosted the U.S. Amateur two years ago and are hosting the U.S. Open three years from now. You just don’t get many opportunities to go play golf courses like that, so that’s an attraction.”
