Head Coach Patty Gasso

On winning the Big 12 regular season:
“Honestly, you may not believe this; but we aren’t looking at that. We’re not going, ‘Oh, we need one more win.’ We don’t talk about it; we just go out and compete. We’re not really thinking Big 12; we’re more thinking big picture. If you think big picture, the rest of it will find you. This team understands how to compete and to keep them loose we don’t say, ‘Oh, this is a must win.’ They understand that every day from here on out is bigger and bigger and bigger. But, there’s no reason for us to talk about it. It’s just best to go out and do it. There’s no pressure from the side, just trying to go out and play good softball.”

On if the team is peaking since Lauren Chamberlain’s return:
“I don’t know because this team was playing really well without Lauren and when she’s back in I’m going, ‘Wow this feels good,’ but I’m not going, ‘Wow, we just took off.’ I feel like we are continuing to go on a steady climb and the climb is not since—I think really since Lauren’s departure, we haven’t really taken many dips. I mean, Texas, we had a dip but you have to give your team a few of those mulligans. I have seen more of a steady incline in that we’re going in the right direction, but not 'wow we’re peaking.' I think if you told this team, ‘Are you playing your best softball right now, are you peaking,’ they would say—no.”

On Kady Self’s injury:
“We got her MRI, we’re still waiting to get the exact word from it; but I would expect that you’re not going to see her tomorrow. That will give us time to have an exact game plan of what could happen. I think whatever it is, whether she’s in or not, she will have a brace on her knee. I think that’s the best way to say it. How much damage, I don’t know.”

On whether it is a season-ending injury for Self:
“You know, with knees, you can play with a torn ACL in certain circumstances; it’s just how much damage is done in there. I think we’re expecting that the ACL is torn. If there’s more damage or meniscus problems then we may lose her. If there’s not more than that, then we may be able to brace this up and see if we can get through it. But that’s really me saying more than I know right now.”

On RHP Kelsey Stevens:
“She has extreme confidence and I think she’s really coming into her own. We were just talking about where this team was in February and March to where we are and you see Kelsey’s number. Her record is 31-7 and I think those seven losses were all relatively early in the season. She’s kind of been leading the way for this big improvement on the mound. The fact that she’s telling us, ‘Give me the ball again, I can do this again,’ after she threw over 100 pitches yesterday; I think it’s something that this team appreciates and it fires them up. They want to play well behind her, they want to score runs for her because she’s saying, ‘Give me the ball. I’m going to keep going and finding ways for this team to win.’ It’s just really infectious. She, right now—to me, she’s one of the best out there out right now and no one’s talking about her with what she’s doing in finding ways for us to win big games. She’s doing it over and over and I think she’s number two with wins—she tied it today and that’s incredible. And, again, who would think that she would be in this place two months ago. I don’t think that many people would think that or really, that we would be playing for a Big 12 championship. I’m just extremely proud of the efforts and determination and never say die attitude of this group.”

Senior Brittany Williams

On her mindset when at bat:
“I’m just staying aggressive early in the count and not letting those good pitches go by early in the count. I’m taking my hacks and the first-pitch strikes.”

On her home run today:
“After my first at-bat, she piped the first one and I was like, ‘Oh, I missed a good pitch.’ So the second at-bat, I went in with the mindset of taking my hacks earlier in the count and hitting that good pitch.”

On getting where they want to be in the postseason:
“I feel like we still have a lot of work to do, but other than that, I feel like we’re a hardworking team and we’re going to go out and do our best and not think about that one game thing.”
