OU vs. Kansas
April 4, 2014

Head Coach Patty Gasso:

On if this was a statement game:
“We knew we had to come out fast and kind of set a tone, and being that you’re home and you have your home-field advantage you really try to do that. With Georgia [Casey] getting on and Kady Self doing what she’s doing these days, that really kind of started things up for us. I think they felt us coming at them hard. I thought the momentum, the crowd—just the whole feeling of the game just completely felt on our side, and that’s really here at home what you try to do because it can work so much for you. Statement game? I don’t know. It’s a Big 12 game, and that’s what it’s about. We’re here to work to win the Big 12, so any time we get to play somebody who’s a Big 12 opponent, we’re getting after it.”

On Kady Self:
“I would tell you that we walked away from the OSU game feeling like we didn’t really perform offensively the way we’re capable of, but really, looking throughout the entire lineup, everybody had a piece of this. Whether they either found a way to get on through a base on balls and come back and score, or—Kady with three hits, Shelby [Pendley], and Brittany [Williams], Whitney [Ellis], Destinee [Martinez] was hot tonight, Leslie Miller—it’s not the same three, and that’s what we were kind of living off of for awhile. To see some of these young players come on the way they are, it’s really satisfying to them and really makes us proud of the work that they’re putting in at practices really coming to fruition now.

On the pitching situation for the rest of the weekend:
“I don’t even know, honestly. The beauty of this game tonight is that Kelsey threw 66 pitches, and that is really nothing. That’s about half a game for her normally, so she should be able to come out tomorrow and get after it, and the rest of the group is ready. We haven’t made any decisions but we have options, which is nice.”

Sophomore Kelsey Stevens:

On pitching with run support:
“It takes a lot of pressure off you, obviously. I always feel pretty confident even if we haven’t scored yet, that we’re going to score, but especially when you get runs in the first inning, it really helps you as a pitcher.”

On building on this game for tomorrow:
“I think we just need to keep the same energy that we had today. It was really good in the dugout and the fans were great. We just need to come out in the first inning again and show them that we’re still here to play, and not let down.”

Sophomore Kady Self:

On her hot streak:
“It’s been really good. It’s been nice to see hard work pay off and to be able to help the team in any way I can.”

On facing strikeout artist Kelsey Kessler:
I don’t know if it [my approach] necessarily changes. You just go up there and, I mean, it makes you want to hit good off of her, but you just go up there and see the ball good and hit it, same thing against any pitcher.”
