LAFAYETTE, La. – No. 19/13 Oklahoma fell in game two of a doubleheader Saturday at No. 23/24 Louisiana-Lafayette, 3-1, giving the Ragin’ Cajuns a sweep of the twinbill.
After dropping game one earlier in the day, 7-0, the Sooners (18-8) suffered their second two-game losing streak of the season in the nightcap to ULL (17-6-1).
Oklahoma scored its only run of the game in the sixth inning.
Trailing 3-0, senior Destinee Martinez led off the frame with a single up the middle. Junior Shelby Pendley followed with a double to the gap in right center to put two into scoring position with no out. Sophomore Whitney Ellis then hit a grounder to short, which was fielded by Corin Voinche, who threw back to second base to nab Pendley.
Martinez scored on the play and Ellis reached safely at first on the fielder’s choice, but the inning came to an end one batter later. Sophomore Erin Miller’s line drive was snared by ULL starter Christina Hamilton as she started the inning-ending 1-3 double play.
Pendley’s double extended her hitting streak to 10 games, matching a career high set from March 31-April 14, 2012, while she was a freshman at Arizona. She was 1-3 in the game, joining Martinez, junior Georgia Casey and senior Brittany Williams as the Sooners to collect base hits.
Like in game one, the first two innings passed scoreless but the Ragin’ Cajuns were able to get on the board in the third inning as Natalie Fernandez hit a leadoff triple and Haley Hayden drove her in with an RBI single.
Louisiana-Lafayette added to its lead with two more runs in the fourth when Hayden hit a two-run double off the wall in center field.
Hayden was 2-4 on the day with three runs batted in, while Fernandez was 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a walk.
Oklahoma is back in action Tuesday at home when Bradley visits Norman. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Marita Hynes Field, and the game will be shown on Fox Sports Southwest and Fox College Sports.
