Chamberlain set the Big 12 and OU career home run record by blasting No. 62 to lead off the fourth inning. The solo shot broke the mark she shard with former Sooner Jessica Shults and moved her into a tie for 25th all-time in Division I history. Chamberlain also had a triple in the game, scored twice and walked once.
NORMAN, Okla. – Junior Lauren Chamberlain set the Big 12 and Oklahoma career home run record as No. 20/13 Oklahoma (11-5) opened a doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-7) by taking the game, 10-0, in five innings.
Chamberlain had tied the mark of 61 set by former Sooner Jessica Shults in the first game of the season, but came through with the record-breaking hit on Friday. Having already tripled and walked, Chamberlain led off the fourth inning by homering the on the first pitch she saw.
The home run was the second of her season and moved her into a tie for 25th all-time in NCAA DI history with three other players with 62 in her career. Chamberlain finished the game 2-2 with two runs scored and a walk.
“It is just an honor to be in the same ballpark as her name,” Chamberlain said of breaking Shults’ mark. “Hers is such a huge name. She was a big reason why I came to OU and I have known her for a long time so it is cool to share that little piece of history with her.
“She is a great hitter. I think she was really happy for me and it’s cool because we feel that mutual respect towards each other as well. Credit to her for setting that record in the first place; she is awesome.”
Oklahoma jumped on the Golden Lions early, scoring six runs in the first inning.
With two outs and Chamberlain on third after hitting her first triple of the year, junior Georgia Casey doubled to open the scoring. Walks loaded the bases and UAPB looked to be out of the inning by an error on second baseman Rolanda Murry on a ball hit by junior Callie Parsons allowed two runs to score and kept the inning alive.
Sophomore Whitney Ellis capitalized on the miscue and hit a two-run double to left center, while junior Jessica Vest added an RBI single to make it 6-0.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff tried to cut into the lead but hit in a double play with one on and one out in the second, and had a runner on second erased in the third on caught stealing by Ellis.
Oklahoma put the run-rule into effect with a four-run fourth.
After Chamberlain hit her home run to lead it off, senior Javen Henson followed two batters later with her first homer of the season to make it 8-0. Sophomore Paris Townsend hit a pinch-hit single and came around to score later in the frame when senior Brittany Williams connected on her second home run of the season.
Sophomore Leslie Miller got the win as she pitched 3.0 innings of relief and allowed just two hits while striking out two. She gave up no runs and no walks to improve to 2-0.
