NORMAN, Okla. -- Adding to her legacy, Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso was inducted in the Hall of Fame of her alma mater, Long Beach State, on Nov. 12, 2013.
Playing under her maiden name Patty Froelich with the 49ers, Gasso was a softball standout in the team's early years during the 1983 and 1984 seasons.
"Getting an opportunity back then to play college softball was a dream," Gasso said. "There wasn't scholarship money back then, so I had to try to make ends meet financially by playing and working. It was tough, but I loved every second of it.
"I received a phenomenal education there from teachers who helped me form my philosophies toward coaching and teaching that have stayed with me to this day."
Gasso said that choosing to attend Long Beach State proved to be a blessing for her.
“I just really enjoyed playing for head coach Pete Manarino, who came in with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement," she said. "I believe it was only our second year of being an NCAA sport; it was an intramural sport before then. I also met my husband, Jimmy, at Long Beach so there were a lot of life-changing moments that happened there.”
After leaving Long Beach State, Gasso coached at Long Beach City College for four years before taking the head coaching position at Oklahoma in 1995.
“I know I would not have been able to have the success and the career that I’ve had here at Oklahoma without the experiences I had at Long Beach State," she said. "To go back and say that the school you graduated from wants to recognize you in this way is an amazing experience.
"And being one of the only females recognized, there were a couple that weren’t able to attend, it was a big deal to be able to represent them. It was a first-class banquet.”The nine-person 2013 Hall of Fame induction class also included such notables as Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, NFL Hall of Fame coach George Allen and current ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg.
"We're very proud to announce this outstanding class of inductees for the Long Beach State Hall of Fame," said Athletic Director Vic Cegles. "The accomplishments and achievements of this group truly represent the best in what Long Beach State Athletics has to offer."
