STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Brandon Doughty (mile) and Alex Morgan (discus) made the most of their final competition in the regular season with each winning at the Jace LaCoste Invitational Saturday. The Sooner men finished third overall in the team standings while the women were sixth.

Morgan recorded her winning throw of 163-11 on her final attempt of the discus competition. Kate Foster, who finished second with a 163-1, also posted her best mark on her final attempt of the meet.

"I have been extremely pleased with Alex and Kate the last two weeks," Sooner head coach Jim VanHootegem said. "They handle their business well and always compete."

Doughty's mile time of 4:00.53 was a career best. Patrick Gomez finished seventh in the mile with a 4:11.46.

Molly Williams recorded a 4:47.19, a career best, to finish third in the mile. Kelsey McKee took fourth with a 4:47.41, also a career-best mark. All four Sooner entries in the women's mile had PRs in the event.

"All of our milers did a great job," praised VanHootegem. "Of course, Brandon's performance really stood out. He was fantastic today.

"Molly (Williams) had a really good mile and came back with a PR in the 800. She is really rounding into form at the right time. Kelsey (McKee) was a real standout for us today with a huge PR in the mile and a PR for her split in the 4x400 relay."

In the men's 800, Malcolm Wankel finished third and Allen Eke was fifth. Wankel's time of 1:49.58 was a career best and moved him into 10th place on OU's all-time career list. It marked his third consecutive week to improve his time in the 800.

"I was really happy for Malcolm (Wankel) today. He ran a tough race and set a nice PR which drops him under 1:50 and ranks him top 10 all-time at OU," the Sooner coach continued.

Williams and Cessily Jones pulled double duty in today's competition in individual races. Williams added an eighth-place finish in the 800 with a 2:13.16, a career best for the redshirt senior. Jones was sixth in the 100 with an 12.87 and fifth in the 200 with a 24.55, a season best for the sophomore.

"It was a perfect competition for us here in Starkville," VanHootegem added. "I coached here from 1998-2000 with Al Schmidt, who remains a dear friend and mentor for me.

"Everyone had an opportunity today so we set ourselves up well for the Big 12 Championships in two weeks."

The Sooners will focus on final exams next week before competing in the Big 12 Championships May 16-18 in Lubbock, Texas.
