Simbassa Leads the Way at Brutus Hamilton

BERKELEY, Calif. – Junior distance runner Abbabiya Simbassa opened the 2014 Brutus Hamilton Invitational in a positive way for the Oklahoma track and field program on Friday, taking second in the men’s 5000-meter run with a time of 14:12.88.

This was Simbassa's first race at that distance outdoors this season.

The meet is split into an Open section and a Challenge section. The Open section, which took place on Friday, consisted mostly of non-scoring events, with the exception of the 5000-meter run, the 3000-meter steeplechase, the hammer throw and the javelin. 

Eric Graf and Kyle Polman also competed in the men’s 5000-meter run. Graf finished ninth (14:49.58) and Polman was 23rd (15:21.80).

On the women’s side of the 5000, Oklahoma had a pair of freshmen race to a top-10 finish. Elena Arriaza placed third with time of 17:01.17, and Brittany Tretbar finished eighth with a time of 17:36.51 in her second race of the season at that distance.

Bryce Perry was Oklahoma’s lone competitor in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase. After finishing second at last week’s John Jacobs Invitational, she came in eighth on Friday in 11:18.23.

Rylee Rackley finished fourth in the women’s hammer with a 196-9.00, her fifth finish in the top five this outdoor season. Sarah Tolson placed seventh with a 179-5.00. Charles Nguyen finished sixth with a 184-9.00.

With the Open section of the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in the books, the Challenge portion, which is a four-way scoring meet that includes Cal, Utah State, Oklahoma and New Mexico, will take place tomorrow with the field events starting at noon CT and the track events beginning at 2:40 p.m. CT.
