NORMAN, Okla. – In just over three days, the student-athletes of the Big 12 Conference who compete in track and field will gather in Lubbock, Texas, for the annual Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. If pre-meet performances are any indication, there could be several Sooners at or near the top of the award stands as the events are completed.
With all performances reported through meets of May 10, 12 Sooners are ranked in the top three of the Big 12 for their performances throughout the 2014 outdoor track and field season. Four of those OU athletes – Nolan Hay (men’s long jump), Hayden McClain (men’s triple jump), Tyler Renton (men’s javelin) and Avione Allgood (women’s javelin) sit at the top of their events with the best mark posted this season.
Several Sooners are ranked in the top 10 of multiple events including Allgood who also is ranked in the shot put and McClain who is ranked in the long and triple jump events. Other multiple ranked Sooners include Austin Perry (shot put, hammer); Brandon Doughty (steeplechase, 5,000 and 1,500); Alex Deir (steeplechase and 1,500); and Abbabiya Simbassa (5,000 and 10,000).
Competition in the meet begins Friday with the start of the heptathlon and decathlon as well as the finals of the hammer, javelin and 10,000. The meet continues until Sunday. Updated meet information, heat sheets and results will be available at texastech.com.
