U.S. Championships This Weekend

NORMAN, Okla. -- Nine former, current and incoming members of Oklahoma men's gymnastics program are part of the nation's best gymnasts descending on the XL Center in Hartford, Conn., for the P&G Gymnastics Championships this Friday and Sunday, Aug. 16 and 18.

Formerly the Visa Championships, the P&G Championships is the country's premiere gymnastics meet this year where top performers will book their tickets to the World Championships held Sep. 30-Oct. 6 in Antwerp, Belgium.

Current OU gymnasts Kanji Oyama and Michael Squires are set to join former Sooners Jake Dalton, Steven Legendre and Alex Naddour in the senior competition. Incoming freshmen Allan Bower, Lee Grogan, Alex Powarzynski and Colin VanWicklen will also participate at the junior level.

This will be the first U.S. Championship at any level for Squires, who won the NCAA still rings title as a sophomore last season to earn a spot in this weekend's competition. Teammate Oyama, entering his sophomore year, is competing at his third national championship meet, but his first in the senior division. Oyama earned a berth to this year's national meet after finishing fourth in the all-around at the National Qualifer meet last month in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Dalton is the reigning U.S. floor and vault champion and tied for fifth in the all-around last season at the U.S. Championships before competing on the Olympic team in London. So far in 2013 Dalton has won two of the biggest meets of the season, including top honors at the AT&T American Cup and Winter Cup Challenge.

Legendre was a silver medalist on floor at last year's national meet, finishing in a tie for 10th overall. The 2012 Olympic alternate has competed little this season as he recovers from various injuries but looks to place high on floor and vault.

Also an Olympic alternate last year, Naddour is the defending U.S. pommel horse champion and finished 16th last year in the all-around.

Bower, currently a member of the Junior 16-18 National Team, placed sixth last year at nationals in the 16-17 junior division, including a third-place finish on pommel horse.

He will be joined by Grogan, who finished ninth in the all-around at the 2013 Junior Olympic National Championships.

In the 15-16 Junior division, Powarzynski finished ninth in the all-around and second on high bar last year in the junior division and was fifth at this year's JO Nationals. VanWicklen was fourth at JO Nationals and finished ninth in the all-around at last year's Championships.

Former Sooners and national team members Jonathan Horton and Chris Brooks were both forced to withdraw due to injuries. The pair finished fourth and fifth, respectively, last season. Horton is a two-time all-around champion at at the national meet, winning the title in 2009 and 2010.

Joining the Sooners are others of the nation's best, including Danell Leyva, the Olympic all-around bronze medalist; John Orozco, the defending U.S. all-around champion; and Sam Mikulak, the 2013 NCAA all-around champion.
