NORMAN, Okla. -- Three members of the Oklahoma soccer team were honored at the annual Max Weitzenhoffer Scholar-Athlete Breakfast this week. The group continues to highlight the team's commitment to the high levels of academic excellence that head coach Matt Potter emphasizes.

"To have multiple athletes highlighted for their commitment in the classroom makes us all very proud," Potter said. "These student-athletes are committed to the vision, goals and expectations of our program. Often we talk to our student-athletes about the need to 'participate in their own success' and clearly these individuals have done that."

Departing senior Kathryn Watson was one of OU's student-athletes to earn the Dan Gibbens Outstanding Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. The award is given to student-athletes who have attained the highest level of scholarly and athletic success in the prior calendar year and requires a minimum 3.50 grade-point average (GPA). Watson was one of only 10 Oklahoma student-athletes across all sports to earn the award.

Fellow senior Carrie Whigham was honored as one of the recipients of the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the Big 12 Conference's highest academic honor. The honor is given to students who have earned 100 hours with a 3.80 GPA, are a letter winner, and have been in residence at their institution for at least one academic year.

Freshman Paige Jacobs rounded out Oklahoma's honorees. Jacobs was one of the recipients of the Jay Myers Award for true freshmen. The award is given to freshman student-athletes who best combine excellence in scholarship with potential excellence in their chosen field of athletic endeavor and carry a minimum 3.00 GPA.

"While the day belongs to the individuals, I am sure they would all be quick to thank the academic support staff behind the scenes, led by our very own Dr. Carla Winters," Potter added. "All of the staff does a wonderful job of guiding, nurturing and helping our student-athletes.  This is certainly a proud day for me as a coach."
