Sooner Notebook: Five Notes for Week Five
The Oklahoma soccer team will wrap up a three-match home stand this weekend with a pair of contests against Texas Tech and Iowa State. OU’s matchup with the Red Raiders marks the sixth time this season the squad has faced a top 25 opponent (TTU arrives in Norman ranked 15th nationally). The Sooners will look to use their home field advantage to pick up their first conference win this fall after narrow losses to Baylor and Oklahoma State in previous weeks.

Following a pair of narrow losses over the past two weeks of play, Oklahoma is on the hunt for its first conference win of the season this weekend. The Sooners dropped their Big 12 opener on the road against top 25 foe Baylor in a narrow 1-0 decision on Sept. 27 before falling in a 2-1 double-overtime heartbreaker against Oklahoma State last weekend. OU is one of four conference teams looking for its first win in Big 12 play alongside Kansas (0-1-1), Iowa State (0-2-1) and TCU (0-2-1).

It’s been a growing year for a young OU soccer squad this fall. One of the lessons head coach Matt Potter is continuing to work on with his team? Finishing matches: in three of Oklahoma’s last four contests, OU surrendered a game-winning or tying goal in the last 12 or fewer minutes of play.

4. CHASING 100
With Oklahoma’s victories over Texas State, Kennesaw State and Oral Roberts this season, head coach Matt Potter currently holds 98 career victories spanning two schools and 11 seasons. Potter accumulated 88 victories at his previous stop at Washington State before arriving in Norman prior to the 2012 season. He led the Sooners to a 7-9-4 record in his first season at Oklahoma in 2012.

The Oklahoma Athletics Department and FOX Sports announced in August that Sooner Sports TV powered by FOX would broadcast all seven of OU’s home matches this season. Friday’s match against Texas Tech will be broadcast live on FS Oklahoma+ and FOX College Sports Pacific, while Sunday’s showdown with Iowa State will be available on FS Oklahoma and FOX College Sports Central.

OU will wrap up the weekend in a showdown with Iowa State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT. The match will take place at the OU Soccer Complex and receive a live broadcast on FS Oklahoma and FOX College Sports Central.

Sunday’s match will be a battle of two squads looking to keep their Big 12 tournament hopes alive. ISU is seventh in the conference standings at 0-2-1 (6-6-2 overall). Goalkeeper Maddie Jobe is the defending Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week and holds five shutouts for the Cyclones this season.

Who’s New?
With 15 newcomers hitting the field this season for the Sooners, fans can expect to see plenty of new faces on the pitch throughout the fall. The OU coaching staff signed 14 prospects to their signing class in February before adding one additional transfer in the spring.

In-state products joining OU this season are Shiloh Price (Broken Arrow, Okla.), Madison Saliba (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Lisa Robinson (Oklahoma City, Okla.).

The Sooners also added four Arizona high school standouts in Jemma Cota (Mesa, Ariz.), Jamie Iurato (Mesa, Ariz.), Madison Kinzer (Oro Valley, Ariz.) and Rachel Ressler (Phoenix, Ariz.). Four athletes from the Texas soccer ranks chose OU as well: Courtney Forte (Flower Mound, Texas), Paige Jacobs (Coppell, Texas), Miranda Larkin (Rockwall, Texas) and Purdue transfer Katie Sheinfeld (Dallas, Texas).

Rounding out the OU roster will be Daisy Cardona (Ventura, Calif.), Kaitlyn Fahrner (Las Vegas, Nev.), Caren Nelson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Elise Romano (Basking Ridge, N.J.).

Up Next
The Sooners will continue Big 12 play next weekend on the road in Texas, facing the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth and the Texas Longhorns in Austin.

OU will open the weekend at TCU on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. CT. The squads are set to face off in the Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium with live stats available at GoFrogs.com. The Sooners have won five of the last six meetings between the two teams and hold a 6-2-1 series advantage.

Oklahoma will close the weekend against Big 12 rival Texas on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. CT at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field. UT is currently second in the conference standings and leads the Red River Rivalry series, 11-7-1.
