Sooner Notebook: Five Notes for Week Two
1. THE RETURN OF BEDLAM
Friday’s match against Oklahoma State marks the first Bedlam Series opener across all sports in 2013. The non-conference contest will be the first of two showdowns between the Sooners and the Cowgirls this season, with the second taking place in Norman on Oct. 4. Last season’s first Bedlam matchup was a memorable one for OU: the Sooners knocked off then-No. 3 OSU 1-0 in Norman in front of a record crowd of 2,475 fans.
2. NEWCOMERS MAKE DEBUT
A total of 11 student-athletes made their collegiate debuts last weekend in OU’s season-opening match against Tennessee. Six true freshmen got the starting nod for Oklahoma against the Lady Vols: Madison Kinzer (D), Shiloh Price (MF), Jemma Cota (MF), Rachel Ressler (D), Paige Jacobs (MF) and Jamie Iurato (F).
3. SALIBA FOR TWO
True freshman Madison Saliba was a force to be reckoned with in OU’s Sunday match against Kennesaw State, logging two unassisted goals in under two minutes to give the Sooners a 2-0 win on the afternoon. She first deflected a corner kick off the KSU goalkeeper into the back right corner of the net before burying a free kick into the top right corner of the goal to put OU up 2-0.
4. SOONERS AT JOHN CRAIN FIELD
Oklahoma posted a 5-3-2 mark at John Crain Field in the OU Soccer Complex last season, including victories over Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Kansas and TCU and double-overtime ties with Baylor and Vanderbilt. OU is 80-56-15 all-time when playing at home in Norman.
5. SOCCER TO AIR LIVE ON SOONER SPORTS TV
The Oklahoma Athletics Department and FOX Sports announced that Sooner Sports TV will broadcast all seven of OU’s home matches live this year. The matches will be carried on FOX Sports Oklahoma and FOX College Sports Central. In addition, Friday’s match against Oklahoma State will air statewide on FOX Sports Oklahoma, on FOX Sports Plus in Texas and Louisiana and on FOX College Sports nationwide.
Game 3 | at Oklahoma State
Oklahoma kicks off the weekend by opening the 2013 Bedlam Series at Oklahoma State. The match will take place on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live across the state on FOX Sports Oklahoma, as well as nationally on FOX College Sports.
The Cowgirls were picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 by league coaches in the Big 12 preseason poll after finishing seventh in the conference in 2012. OSU holds a 1-0-1 record so far in 2013, notching a 1-0 win over Tennessee-Martin and a 2-2 tie in double-overtime against Vanderbilt.
Oklahoma State senior midfielder Kristen Kelley was a Preseason All-Big 12 pick , with nine career goals and five assists in 61 starts.
Game 4 | vs. Texas State
The Sooners will host their 2013 home opener on Sunday, Sept. 1 against the Texas State Bobcats. The match is slated for a noon CT start and will be broadcast live by Sooner Sports TV on FOX Sports Oklahoma and FOX College Sports Central.
TSU went 1-1 in their opening weekend of competition, topping Northwestern State 3-1 before falling 1-0 to Stephen F. Austin in a pair of road matches.
Sunday’s match will be Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day at the OU Soccer Complex. In addition, fans can receive $4 admission to the event with an OU/ULM football ticket.
