On shutting out ULM:
“It feels great. It’s a confidence booster, but at the same time, one win or one loss doesn’t define you as a team or a defense. I mean if you look at last year, we had a lot of great games but people tend to forget those for the bad games. We are encouraged by the win, but we have to continue moving forward.”

On the play of the secondary:
“I feel encouraged by our performance on Saturday, but like I said before, we have to keep moving forward. One game does not define us. I definitely want to keep it in our ears, as far as being a leader, but at the same time we have to keep improving. “

On his advice to the young guys in the secondary:
“I don’t really have to say too much to the young guys; they are mature. We brought in a lot of really good, positive energy as far as recruitment and Coach Stoops did a good job bringing in good guys who have positive energy for this team. So as far as being a leader, I haven’t had to do much. These guys know what they want, what we expect and everyone knows the goals and expectations for this year. We just have to keep working hard when we go up against West Virginia.”

On the defensive game plan for West Virginia:
“Coach Mike [Stoops] has done a great job with giving us more arsenal and keeping the offense unbalanced. They don’t necessarily know what we’re doing every time, and we’re trying to do a better job at disguising looks and things like that. It does a great job for us and it makes the offense somewhat unsure of what we’re going to play.”

On if he thought last year’s defense was readable:
“Sometimes I do. We were kind of “take it how it is defense” and Coach Mike [Stoops] has done a good job with giving us more arsenal to work with.”

On adding more plays to the defense:
“It is great; it allows us to be more aggressive. It gives us more confidence in what we’re doing because we know we can mess with the quarterback’s head or the receiver’s head or whoever we’re facing. So when we can make the offense unsure of what we’re doing, it only means good things for our defense.”

On Zack Sanchez:
“Zack Sanchez is a very smart and instinctive player no matter how old he is or what is age is. He makes plays at practice and that is what you get in the games. I didn’t necessarily have to say anything before the game, I just told him to play his game, because at the end of the day it’s just football and that’s what he did. At the end of the game I was really proud of him and I hugged him, but that’s the kind of play I expected from him. It’s the kind of play I expect from him this entire season.”

On last year’s game against West Virginia:
“It hurt; I’m not going to lie. For us to give up those kind of numbers to a team like that. Don’t get me wrong they are a great team and the coaches do a great job of putting them in the right situation but as far as the defense, especially here at the University of Oklahoma, it’s not acceptable. We had to move forward from last year. This year we remember what happened last year and we will not forget it.”

On playing a conference game so early in the season:
“I feel like we do have a target on our back at times because of our history and success but at the same time teams are coming up. There are a lot of teams that come out of nowhere, like Kansas State. Last year not a lot of people picked them and you saw their success. So this year, not a lot of people are favoring us to win the conference championship but I know what this team expects and we expect big things from ourselves. We do feel somewhat of a target but at the same time we just have to play our game.”
