Ikard Named Senior CLASS Award Finalist
November 06, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma center Gabe Ikard is one of 10 NCAA FBS student-athletes selected as finalists for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate football. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence –community, classroom, character and competition.

Fans are encouraged to vote at seniorCLASSaward.com through Dec. 16. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January.

Ikard, a native of Oklahoma City, is a senior co-captain who has started in 46 games in his career, including every game this season. He was recently named one of 16 recipients of the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award and is a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, Ikard was also named a midseason All-American by USA Today, Sports Illustrated and CBSSports.com. After graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA in multidisciplinary studies in May, Ikard is currently pursuing a second undergraduate degree at OU.

The anchor of Oklahoma’s offensive line, he is part of a Sooners’ offensive unit that is averaging 234.0 rushing yards per game. In May, Ikard studied “Sport and Culture in Ireland” during a two-week study abroad trip to Ireland and then returned home to Oklahoma to assist in disaster relief efforts following a series of devastating tornadoes in the state.

In 2012, he was part of a group of OU students who traveled to Haiti on a humanitarian trip to assist agencies in Haiti in the wake of an earthquake in that island nation. In addition, Ikard has been an active participant in numerous other charitable causes in Oklahoma and makes frequent visits to local children’s hospitals.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Fans can vote online at www.SeniorClassAward.com through Dec. 16.
