OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – For the Oklahoma rowing team, winning the Big 12 Championship on May 3 was a great accomplishment. The Sooners' newest edition to the trophy case further solidified the young program's rise since coming into existence six short years ago.

But there's another prize to be had, one that comes with an extra incentive - the Conference USA Championship coming up on Saturday. Come home with more first place hardware from Melton Hill Lake this weekend and you'll also be holding a ticket punched for the NCAA Championship.

Last season, OU won its first Big 12 and C-USA titles in program history. While the Big 12 regatta does not host enough teams to qualify for an auto NCAA bid, C-USA does, giving OU its first berth to the NCAA competition where the Sooners' finished 17th in the country.

The taste of success has only stoked Oklahoma's desire to reach even greater heights this postseason. Led by eight rowers named 2014 All-Big 12, including Big 12 Rower of the Year Kristin Clift, the Sooners have the speed to do just that.

"We’re looking forward to a great weekend of racing in Tennessee," said OU head coach Leeanne Crain. "All of the teams in C-USA have shown speed throughout the regular season and we expect some very close racing in the NCAA events. Our team is very focused and ready for the challenge."

Three races will count towards the C-USA Championship, including the first varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four. The format bodes well for OU, as the Sooner 1V8 and 2V8 both claimed victory at Big 12s two weeks ago. All of the Big 12 teams OU faced that day will compete this weekend, along with Alabama, Old Dominion, Sacramento State, San Diego State, Tennessee and Tulsa.

The varsity four, which finished fourth in its Big 12 race, has picked up a solid week of practice and is looking the best it has all year. An open four boat and a third varsity eight will also compete in non-scored races this weekend. Competition begins at 8 a.m. CT on Saturday with the first heat of the 1V8. The top three boats from each heat will advance to the grand finals which will be held starting at 2:20 p.m. CT, culminating in the 1V8 Grand Final at 3:50 p.m. Live results can be found here while a live stream of the races can be seen here.
