NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma rowing novices had two top-three finishes competing at the Head of the Colorado on Saturday.

Of the 27 novices competing Saturday, all but eight were racing for the first time for OU. The remainder raced in the fall season opener at the Head of the Oklahoma earlier this month.

"The first race tells us a lot," said OU novice coach Emma Gresson. "You start to identify the true racers. We will be doing more selection this coming week to make the most competitive lineups for Head of the Hooch."

In the first race of the day for Oklahoma, OU finished second with a time of 21:59.6 in the second novice eight race, topping boats from SMU, Texas and Northwestern State. The Texas A boat finished first in 21:25.2.

The Sooners raced two boats in the first novice eight competition, placing third in 19:59.0 and sixth in 22:23.6, respectively.

"The first novice eight showed some great speed against Texas," Gresson added. "We will use that gap as motivation over the next week as we train for the Head of the Hooch. The third novice eight also competed well; we made some last-minute changes that appeared to add some speed."

Oklahoma's fall season, a precursor to the championship spring season, continues at the Head of the Hooch next weekend where both varsity and novices will compete in Chattanooga, Tenn., Nov. 2-3.
