NORMAN, Okla. -- In a fitting illustration of OU's depth, two freshmen on the top-ranked Oklahoma women's gymnastics team brought home awards from the Big 12 Conference this week.
Freshmen Chayse Capps and McKenzie Wofford continued a streak of three weeks with at least two Sooner gymnasts earning recognition from the conference offices. Wofford was named Event Specialist of the Week, while Capps earned her second Newcomer of the Week award for 2014.
A native of McKinney, Texas, Wofford was clutch in several crucial situations for Oklahoma. In her first career road meet, Wofford posted career-high performances on both bars (9.9) and beam (9.925) for the Sooners. She finished in a tie for second overall on bars, aiding the Sooners to a 49.450 on the event--the team's highest score this season. Originally scheduled to exhibition on beam, Wofford was forced to jump in as a late lineup substitution in what would be her first career appearance for OU on the event. Wofford responded in a big way, finishing second overall behind teammate Taylor Spears.
Capps earned her second career weekly honor after shining in three key appearances in her first career road competition. The Plano, Texas native earned or tied career-high marks on two events while earning a key score on a third. Capps picked up a 9.875 on vault to boost the Sooners to a 49.450 on the event before earning a 9.85 on floor in the No. 2 slot of the lineup. Capps wrapped up the meet with a career-high 9.9 on beam to aid OU to a 49.525--the nation's second-highest score on the event this season.
The No. 1 Sooners are set to face No. 2 Florida this weekend in Gainesville. The 6 p.m. CT meet on Jan. 31 is a rematch between the nation's top two finishers from 2013, with the defending NCAA champions hosting NCAA runner-up Oklahoma in Florida.
