NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team blew past the Iowa State Cyclones, 196.675-193.050 on Friday night at the Lloyd Noble Center. A crowd of 2,864 cheered the Sooners on to victory in their Big 12 home opening meet in Norman.

"Tonight was a learning experience for us; a character building night," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "This is a strong team and they can do it. But we are at the beginning of our season and are learning about ourselves."

The sophomores swept event titles on all four apparatuses and in the all-around for the second week in a row. Junior Erica Brewer led the way, earning the all-around title (49.425) and beam title (9.825), while tying with teammates Haley Scaman and Taylor Spears for top honors on bars (9.85). Scaman and Keeley Kmieciak tied for the vault title (9.9), while Lara Albright took home top honors on floor (9.9).

Oklahoma's trend of powerful vaults continued this week as the Sooners hit a 49.400 to start the night with a bang. Sophomores Haley Scaman and Keeley Kmieciak led the way for OU with identical scores of 9.9. Erica Brewer gave the Sooners momentum in the No. 2 spot with a career-high 9.875, and Maile'ana Kanewa added a 9.875 in the No. 3 slot.

Led by a 9.825 from Henrietta Green, the Cyclones posted a 48.475 on bars to open the evening. After the first rotation, Oklahoma held a 49.400-48.475 lead over ISU.

The bottom half of Oklahoma's lineup paced its efforts on bars, with a senior, junior and sophomore tying for top honors on the event. Scaman, Brewer and Taylor Spears each posted 9.85 routines to aid OU to a 49.150 overall. Freshman McKenzie Wofford also put forth a solid effort in the No. 3 position, sticking a 9.825 routine for the Sooners.

Alex Marasco's score of 9.725 aided Iowa State to a 48.250 on vault in the second rotation. With two events down, Oklahoma held a commanding 98.550-96.725 lead over ISU.

OU's efforts on beam were highlighted by experienced upperclassmen and a spark of young talent. Brewer paced Oklahoma with a 9.825 to take the event title, while Spears added a 9.8 for the Sooners. Freshman Chayse Capps added a burst of momentum in the No. 2 spot for OU, picking up a 9.8 to aid the squad to a 48.875.

A 9.8 for Caitlin Brown led Iowa State to a 48.675 on floor. With only one rotation remaining on the evening, the Sooners led ISU by a mark of 147.425-145.400.

Oklahoma's second week of competition saw the squad post another strong performance on floor exercise, earning a 49.200 this week to end the meet. Albright led the way with her meet-high 9.9 in the lead-off position, while Brewer posted a 9.875 for the second week in a row. Spears and Scaman also had strong performances, with each picking up 9.85 efforts.

"Last week we obviously started really strong but we also didn’t face as many challenges as we did tonight," junior Rebecca Clark said. "We had a really smooth week last week and it was great for the team to experience that, but this week had a lot of things that we need to deal with better than we did tonight. It’s a great learning experience."

Oklahoma will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend, travelling west to face the Arizona Wildcats. The meet is set for a 5 p.m. CT start on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the McKale Memorial Center in Tucson, Ariz.
