NORMAN, Okla. -- After a dominant performance to open the season, it was only fitting that the No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team would execute a sweep of the Big 12 weekly honor listing to kick off 2014. The Sooners' gymnasts did just that.
Junior Erica Brewer took home the season's first conference Gymnast of the Week award, while junior Rebecca Clark was named Event Specialist of the Week and freshman Chayse Capps captured Newcomer of the Week accolades, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Hailing from Louisville, Ky., Brewer's honor is the third Gymnast of the Week award of her career. She posted the highest home all-around score of her career (39.450) to take the all-around title last weekend against No. 8 Georgia. Brewer was also tops for OU on uneven bars, picking up a 9.925 in the anchor position to earn the event title. Her vault score of 9.85 also tied her career-high.
Blue Springs, Mo., native Rebecca Clark earned her first career Big 12 honor on Wednesday. Clark competed two events for OU, tying for top honors on beam with a 9.925. Her score tied for the No. 1 score in the country on the event over the weekend, while her efforts aided OU to a nation-best 49.375 on beam. She also posted a 9.875 on uneven bars for the Sooners.
Capps had an outstanding weekend of competition in her first outing for Oklahoma, appearing on three apparatuses. Her 9.875 vault factored into the Sooners' impressive 49.475 team score on the even, while her effort of 9.9 on floor exercise tied for the squad's second-highest score. The Plano, Texas, native also competed on beam, earning a 9.75.
After last weekend's 197.700-196.500 victory over No. 8 Georgia, the Sooners will be back in action this Friday night at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman. OU is set to face Iowa State at 6:45 p.m., with a live broadcast available on SoonerSportsTV.
