NORMAN, Okla. -- Seven members of the University of Oklahoma women's gymnastics team were named 2013 Academic All-Big 12, the conference announced Tuesday.
OU led the Big 12 with its seven selections, including six on the first team. Iowa State had six members, while West Virginia placed five.
Junior Lara Albright, sophomore Lauren Alexander, sophomore Rebecca Clark, senior Kayla Nowak, senior Brie Olson and junior Taylor Spears were named to the first team while junior Madison Mooring was named to the second team.
Albright, a management major, was the only student-athlete of the 18 honored who boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Also majoring in management, Nowak was named Academic All-Big 12 for the third time in her career while Mooring, a pre-physical therapy major, earned recognition for the second-straight year.
The list marked the seventh-straight year that at least four OU gymnasts have earned the honor. Under head coach K.J. Kindler, OU gymnasts have earned 46 Academic All-Big 12 honors.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
After finishing with a national-best record of 19-1 during the regular season, the Sooners will look to defend their Big 12 title this Saturday, March 23, at the Big 12 Championship in Ames, Iowa. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. CT.
