NORMAN, Okla. -- Junior Taylor Spears won Big 12 Gymnast of the Week and sophomore Lauren Alexander won Big 12 Specialist of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Spears is the Gymnast of the Week recipient for the sixth time this season, tying the Conference record for most Gymnast of the Week awards in one year. The honor is the second for Alexander this season. The pair joined West Virginia's Jaida Lawrence, who was named Newcomer of the Week.
A native of Plano, Texas, Spears won her sixth all-around title of the year at No. 4 Alabama, earning a 39.450. Spears, the No. 1-ranked gymnast on beam in the nation, also took the individual beam title against the Crimson Tide, earning a 9.95.
Alexander scored a 9.9 on beam in the Sooners' meet at Bama, finishing second overall at the meet. The sophomore is currently No. 7 in the country and No. 2 in the Big 12 on beam.
OU gymnasts won 27 of the Big 12's 33 weekly honors this season, with nine different Sooners earning at least one recognition.
After finishing with a national-best record of 19-1 during the regular season, the Sooners will look to defend their Big 12 title this Saturday, March 23, at the Big 12 Championship in Ames, Iowa. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. CT.
