NORMAN, Okla. -- Four days after leading the University of Oklahoma women’s golf team to a Big 12 Conference title, fifth-year head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell, freshman Alexandra Kaui and seniors Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Anne-Catherine Tanguay each received Big 12 postseason awards, the conference announced Thursday.
Drouin-Luttrell was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year, her second such honor since arriving at Oklahoma. Drouin-Luttrell directed the Sooners to a record-breaking score of 861 (-3) at the Big 12 Championship, as the team placed all five of its golfers in the top 12 of the tournament. The coach-of-the-year award is voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Kaui was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and was named to the 10-member All-Big 12 Team. Kaui owns a team-leading 72.78 (+1.67) stroke average on the year and has recorded four top-10 finishes in nine tournaments. The Honolulu, Hawaii, native received two Big 12 Golfer-of-the-Month awards and was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team by virtue of her sixth-place league showing.
Jao-Javanil and Tanguay joined Kaui on the All-Big 12 Team, giving OU the most representatives of any school.
The honor marked Jao-Javanil’s fourth straight selection to the team. In the 18-year history of the league, she is one of just seven women’s golfers (two at OU; Lisa Meldrum 2001-04) to be named a four-time All-Big 12 honoree. The product of Hua-Hin, Thailand, is fresh off a Big 12 Championship individual title. Her three-round 209 (-7) was just one stroke off the event record. Jao-Javanil boasts a 72.89 (+1.78) season scoring average.
Tanguay’s selection to the team was her second in as many years. The Quebec City, Quebec, native was OU’s top finisher in two of its nine tournaments and posted a 73.11 (+2.00) stroke average on the year, third best on the Sooners’ roster.
“I’m very honored to receive this award,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “It has been a team effort. I’m also proud of Chirapat, Anne-Catherine and Alexandra for being named to the All-Big 12 Team. They’ve been working hard all season and to see everything paying off at the end of the season is exciting for them.”
Drouin-Luttrell and the Sooners will return to the course May 8-10 as the No. 3 seed at the NCAA West Regional in Cle Elum, Wash.
