Three Sooners to Compete in All-Star Event
November 01, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. -- Three University of Oklahoma wrestlers will compete at the 2013 NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The event is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. CT.

Redshirt seniors Kendric Maple, Jarrod Patterson and Andrew Howe will all participate in the star-studded event.

Maple will face Ohio State’s Logan Stieber in the event at 149 pounds. Both wrestlers are coming off nearly identical seasons where they were among six wrestlers to go undefeated. They both won NCAA Championships as Maple posted a 31-0 record at 141 pounds while Stieber posted a 27-0 record at 133 pounds.

Maple has assembled an illustrious OU career thus far in which he has a 102-18 overall record. He garnered back-to-back All-America honors in his redshirt sophomore and redshirt junior seasons and also won Big 12 titles in those years.

During quarterfinal action of the 2013 NCAA Championships, Maple earned his 100th career win, making him the first wrestler under head coach Mark Cody to reach the milestone. He is one of 13 Sooners all-time to reach at least 100 victories in his career.

Patterson, who is appearing in the event for the second time, will face Nahshon Garrett of Cornell University in the 125 pound match. Overall, Patterson has an 84-26 record for his career.

As a freshman in 2009-10, Patterson won a Big 12 Championship and made a trip to the NCAA Championships, where he went 2-2. His sophomore season, Patterson earned All-America honors after finishing seventh at the national tournament. As a junior, Patterson finished second in the Big 12 and returned to NCAAs. He redshirted in 2012-13.

In the 174 pound match, Howe will face Matt Brown of Penn State, a matchup pitting the Big Ten champions against one another for the first time. The NWCA All-Star Classic will mark Howe’s first appearance as a Sooner after he redshirted last season.

Howe transferred to OU from Wisconsin, where he won three Big Ten Championships at 165 pounds (2009, 2010, 2011). Howe is a three-time All-American, earning the honors with an NCAA runner-up finish as a freshman, a victory as a sophomore and a third place finish as a junior.

The NWCA All-Star Classic is utilizing a new concept of out of weight class match-ups in hopes to create excitement for wrestling fans to start the collegiate season. To purchase tickets for the event, visit the Ticketmaster website.
