NORMAN – The No. 11 University of Oklahoma baseball team hit through the order in each of the first two innings on the way to a 20-3 win over Oral Roberts at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Wednesday night. The Sooners overcame one-run deficit in the first to improve to 25-11 on the year, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 17-14.

“I really thought that our kids had a lot more energy in the first couple innings compared to last night,” stated OU head coach Skip Johnson. “We spoke about that last night after the game and they came out and responded, which is really good to see.”

Oklahoma got production up and down the lineup to claim the season sweep of Oral Roberts after winning in Tulsa, 5-2, last Tuesday. Junior third baseman Brylie Ware (Sedgwick, Kan.) was 4-for-6 with three RBI and a double in the heart of the Sooner order.

A total of five OU players recorded multi-hit nights, including redshirt-sophomore center fielder Kyler Murray (Allen, Texas), who drove in the game-tying run in the bottom of the first. Ware then singled up the middle to put the Sooners in front and they never looked back. Murray finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Ware drove in three runs.

“What we have done has dealt with the game in the moments of the game one pitch at a time and that is the only thing that we can control and that is what we talk about,” continued Johnson. “That is the only thing that really can be consistent and I am really proud of those guys for doing that and buying into that. It is a good sight to see and anything can turn it. And that is why you have to go back to your releases and you have got to get back being yourself because that is the only thing that you can control in this game.”

The Sooners blew the game open early with five runs in the first and six in the second. Freshman designated hitter Cade Cavalli (Bixby, Okla.) had the big knock in the first; a two-run double to right. In the second, junior left fielder Cade Harris (Leona, Texas) led off with a home run to left. Ware drove in two and junior catcher Domenic DeRenzo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) capped the inning with a two-run single up the middle.

Oklahoma scored six more runs in the fifth. Murray drove in two with a double ripped down the left field line and DeRenzo drove in his fourth with his second sacrifice-fly of the night.

In the sixth, junior right fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) jacked a two-run home run to deep right-center. He finished the night 3-for-5 with four runs and three RBI. He double in the fifth for his 40th career double.

Redshirt-junior right-hander Lane Ramsey (Oklahoma City) made the start on the mound for OU. Ramsey (2-1) went two innings and allowed one run on two this and three walks with two strikeouts. Junior RHP Dylan Grove (Moore, Okla.) followed with three innings on one-run ball as he issued one walk, surrendered one hit and struck out a pair.

Lefty Taylor Varnell (2-3) pitched one-plus inning in the start for ORU. He allowed nine runs on five hits and four walks.

The Sooners, first place in the Big 12, host third place Texas in Norman this weekend. The action gets underway Friday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m.
