NORMAN – A pair of Oklahoma gymnasts were honored by the Big 12 the conference announced Monday. Senior Stefani Catour (Co-Event Specialist) and sophomore Maggie Nichols (Gymnast) and were each honored by the conference for the second consecutive week.
Catour was honored for the third time this season and sixth of her career. This is the sixth time this season Nichols has been honored as the Gymnast of the Week, and ninth of her career. Nichols was also named the Newcomer of the Week seven times in 2017, giving her 16 career accolades, the most in OU program history.
Nichols was named the Gymnast of the Week after yet another strong performance in the Sooners’ final home meet of the season. She posted her fifth all-around score of 39.7 or higher this season to take home the all-around title with a 39.725. She also claimed the beam title with a near-perfect 9.975. The sophomore posted at least a 9.9 or higher on all four events for the fourth time this season. Nichols recorded a 9.95 or higher on beam for the sixth time this season and finished the meet placing second on bars, floor and vault.
Catour helped lead OU to its highest bar score of the season (49.625). She tied her career-high on bars with a 9.925 in the No. 3 spot and added a 9.850 in the leadoff spot on beam. Catour posted a 9.9 or higher on bars for the third time this season.
Up next, the Sooners will have their first double weekend of the season, traveling to Alabama and TWU. OU will face off against Alabama Friday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. CT in Tuscaloosa Ala., before hitting the road to Denton, Texas to take on TWU Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. CT. The meet against Alabama will air on the SEC Network+.
