NORMAN – Oklahoma wrestling will send five student-athletes to compete to the 2018 NCAA Championships from March 15-17 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
Three Sooners automatically qualified through their finishes at the Big 12 Championships in Tulsa. Christian Moody (125 pounds) earned his berth with a sixth-place finish, Dawaylon Barnes (165 pounds) won the fifth-place bout in Tulsa to seal his spot in the tournament and Yoanse Mejias finished fourth at 174 pounds to pen his name in the bracket.
Junior Davion Jeffries was named one of six at-large selections at 149 pounds on Tuesday. Jeffries will head to Cleveland with a 24-17 overall record on the 2017-18 campaign.
Mejias and Moody have been constants in Intermat's national top-20 rankings throughout the season. Mejias is 28-9 overall this season, while Moody has a 23-13 tally in his redshirt sophomore season which includes a 12-match win streak.
Longo earned a spot as an alternate, his fourth trip to the NCAA Championships in his collegiate career.
The Sooners will face some familiar foes in the opening round. Moody squares off against former-Sooner Ryan Millhof of Arizona State in round one. Millhof went 37-21 overall and 16-13 in duals in his two-year career at Oklahoma before transferring to Arizona State.
A Bedlam-bout features at 149 pounds between Jeffries and Boo Lewallen of Oklahoma State. Elsewhere, Barnes' opening opponent, Te'Shan Campbell, was Mejias' NCAA Championships first-round foe last year at 165 pounds.
The first round of the NCAA Championships will begin Thursday, March 15 at 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU, continuing through the championship round on Saturday, March 17 at 7 p.m. CT. All rounds can be viewed on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.
