Baseball Falls in Series Finale to Alabama
NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma baseball team lost its weekend finale to No. 29 Alabama, 13-1, at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners, who wrapped up the series win on Saturday evening, evened their record at 6-6, while the Crimson Tide, who entered the weekend unbeaten, improved to 10-2.
Oklahoma scored in the first inning for the third game of the weekend, but Alabama responded with three runs or more in each inning from the third through sixth innings. The Crimson Tide put together a two-out rally in the third after a double play erased a leadoff-single. Second baseman Chase Avant broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run single with the bases loaded.
Alabama chased OU junior right-hander Kyle Tyler (Oklahoma City) an inning later. Three consecutive one-out hits, capped by a two-run homer to right by designated hitter Cody Henry made it a 7-1 game before the Sooners went to the bullpen. Tyler (0-2) allowed seven runs, five earned, on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
Right-hander Sam Gardner (1-0) got the win in a five-inning start for the Crimson Tide. He allowed just one run on three hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts. Alabama’s lineup combined for 18 hits, including a 3-for-4 day out of the leadoff spot from third baseman Cobie Vance, who scored two and drove in two.
Junior center fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) went 2-for-4; collecting the 39th multi-hit game of his career.
The Sooners remain at home on Tuesday, March 6 against Dallas Baptist at 6:30 p.m.
