NORMAN — The Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team has picked up another weekly award. Genki Suzuki has been named MPSF Gymnast of the Week after his most complete performance of the season in OU’s win against Iowa on Saturday.
This marks the third week in a row that an OU gymnast has won conference gymnast-of-the-week honors with Yul Moldauer winning the previous two weeks.
Suzuki claimed three event titles against the Hawkeyes in Norman, helping the Sooners top their NCAA season high from the previous week with a 418.850.
The North Wales, Pa., native was a force in the second half of the meet on Saturday. Never scoring below a 14.000, he stuck his dismounts in all three of his event titles.
Suzuki’s run started on vault, where the junior posted a career-high 14.550. On parallel bars, Suzuki was a bright spot for OU, pacing the competition with a 14.350. Suzuki then anchored on high bar and earned his final event title of the night. His 14.500 powered OU to a season-high 69.500.
With four meets remaining in the regular season, Suzuki ranks fourth on nationally high bar and 10th on parallel bars.
The Sooners break from regular season action this week with the gymnastics world turning their attention to the Winter Cup. OU returns to McCasland Field House on Saturday, Feb. 24 when it hosts Navy at 7 p.m. To purchase tickets to Oklahoma home meets, call the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (405) 325-2424 or (800) 456-GoOU, or click here.
