NORMAN – Oklahoma guard Shaina Pellington was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Pellington tied her career high with 23 points in Sunday’s win at Iowa State. The freshman finished 9-of-14 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free throw line in OU’s 74-69 victory over the Cyclones. Pellington also led the Sooners with a team-high 16 points against No. 8 Texas last Thursday.

The Pickering, Ontario, native leads all Big 12 freshmen in scoring and field goal percentage during the regular season with 12.9 points per game and a .540 shooting percentage. Pellington’s 19.5 points a game in league play ranks sixth in the conference and leads all Big 12 freshmen.

Through 12 games this season, Pellington has led the Sooners in scoring five times and scored 20-plus points on three different occasions. She is the first OU freshman to have at least three 20-point scoring performances in one season since Aaryn Ellenberg in 2010-11.

Pellington is the third OU freshman to earn Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors this season. Ana Llanusa claimed the award on Dec. 19 after scoring a career-high 27 points against South Florida. Mandy Simpson earned the award on Nov. 13 after recording 12 points, five rebounds and three steals against Belmont in OU’s season opener.

It marks the first time in school history that three different Sooners have won Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors during the same season.

Oklahoma returns home to face TCU on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT inside Lloyd Noble Center. Tickets are available here. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Oklahoma.
