MALIBU, Calif. – Lily Miyazaki clinched a spot in the Oracle ITA Masters Semifinal with a 6-4, 6-1, win over Jessica Livianu of St. John’s University Friday night.
Miyazaki took down Kristina Mathis of Dartmouth, 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 32 and Pepperdine’s Jessica Failla, 3-6, 6-4, 3-0 (ret.) in the sweet 16 prior to tonight’s quarterfinal match.
"I'm very proud of Lily," said head coach Audra Cohen. "She is a true competitor that is willing to change things in her game in order to improve. I am not a surprised she's in the semis tomorrow. She got a taste of the top ten last year, and now she's proving she belongs at the top of college tennis."
Miyazaki will face UCLA’s Ena Shibahara tomorrow. Shibarahara is the defending Oracle ITA Masters champion and is No. 1 in the ITA preseason poll.
The senior was selected to represent the Big 12 Conference at the event, which invites one man and one woman from each Division I Conference to participate in the 32-player singles brackets. The singles champions receive an automatic bid to the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in early November.
The Oracle ITA Masters also features mixed doubles competition, where Miyazaki and her partner Harrison Scott (Texas) advanced to the quarterfinals before they were eliminated.
