NEW ORLEANS – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team snapped a four-match slide with a 3-0 sweep of Nicholls State to open the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic at Devlin Fieldhouse on Friday afternoon. The win lifted the Sooners to 2-5, while the Colonels fell to 1-6.
Both of Oklahoma’s wins on the season have come in straight sets with the Sooners defeating Nicholls by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-20.
The Colonels raced out to an early 7-3 lead in the first set before a 7-2 OU run gave the Sooners their first lead of the match. Junior Morgan Miller (Magnolia, Texas) netted a team-high four kills in the first with two service aces.
Set two was tied 17-17 when Oklahoma went on a 6-0, including two solo blocks from freshman middle blocker Paige Anderson (McKinney, Texas), to go on top 23-17. Miller’s ninth kill of the match and fifth of the set finished off the set to give the Sooners a two sets to none advantage.
Miller collected her second double-double of the season; leading OU with 10 kills to go with 13 assists, nine digs, three aces and two blocks. Junior setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) dished out a team-leading 20 assists as the Sooners hit a collective .254.
Anderson hit .412 with eight kills and four blocks. Junior outside hitter Alyssa Enneking (League City, Texas) added seven kills and a team-leading 13 digs. Freshman libero Kira Morikawa (Honolulu) collected 11 digs.
Brieanna Hill and Stephanie Tobison each tallied nine kills for Nicholls. Jade Piped totaled 30 assists and 12 digs. Emeily Venable picked up 15 digs and Tobison added 14.
Oklahoma is in action twice tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. against Southern Miss followed by a nightcap against Tulane at 7 p.m.
