NORMAN  No. 16 Oklahoma soccer dropped a 1-0 decision in its exhibition match against No. 8 BYU Friday night at the OU Soccer Complex.

BYU’s Brittain Steiner broke a scoreless tie in the 77th minute to give the Cougars the lead. Steiner sent home a one-time shot at the top of the 18-yard box off an assist from Madie Siddoway.

“I actually feel it was a very good college game for an exhibition game,” OU head coach Matt Potter said after the match. “It was almost like November in August. It was exactly what the group needed. I thought we played well at times, and they showed their class at times.

“BYU got the one difference maker in the game, so the night goes to them, but (there were) a lot of pleasing things … Overall, a good collective performance with something to build off of.”

OU redshirt sophomore Kaylee Dao registered three shots in her return to action. Dao provided the Sooners with their first scoring chance of the match, pushing a header just wide of goal in the 15th minute. OU nearly capitalized off a counter attack as Dao nearly capitalized with another header in the inside the 6-yard box in the 22nd minute.

Tori Bowman, Kyle Escobedo, Lizzie Luallin and Rasha Roberts all tallied one shot in the match for the Sooners.

OU put pressure on BYU’s backline early in the match and controlled possession throughout much of the first 45 minutes of the contest, but could not find the back of the net. BYU generated the majority of its scoring opportunities in the second half, recording 11 shots.

Freshman McKinley Crone started in goal for OU and logged six saves in 66 minutes during her first collegiate action. Redshirt senior Kaitlyn Keith played the final 24 minutes for the Sooners, allowing one goal and picking up one save.

BYU outshot OU, 19-7, in the match as the Cougars’ Nadia Gomes recorded four shots with two on goal. Goalkeeper Hannah Clark earned the shutout, playing all 90 minutes.

The Sooners open the regular season next Friday at 7 p.m. CT against Arizona at the OU Soccer Complex. The match will be televised live on Fox Sports Oklahoma.
