NORMAN – Lily Miyazaki has been named a co-recipient of the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, the conference office announced Thursday. Miyazaki shares the honor with Baylor's Blair Shankle.
The Big 12 Conference names a Scholar-Athlete of the Year in each conference-sponsored sport. Each Big 12 institution nominates one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
This is Miyazaki's third award for her accomplishments in the classroom; the junior was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, one of just four tennis players – male or female – conference-wide with a 4.0 GPA. Miyazaki was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large selection.
A 2017 first-team All-Big 12 selection, Miyazaki led the Sooners with a 13-5 dual-match record at the No. 1 line in singles. She finished the regular season ranked No. 32 in singles in the final ITA release and was selected as the 2017 ITA Central Region Player to Watch.
Miyazaki represented Oklahoma at the 64-player NCAA Women's Championship, becoming the first Sooner to do so since 2004.
