NORMAN – Oklahoma women’s tennis travels to Iowa State and West Virginia to close out the regular season this weekend. The Sooners will face the Cyclones Friday at 3 p.m. CT before heading to Morgantown to take on the Mountaineers Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
No. 38 Oklahoma (12-7, 2-5 Big 12) comes into the weekend following a 4-0 loss at Oklahoma State. The Sooners dropped the doubles point to open the match, but put up a fight in singles play. When play was halted, OU led on the last three courts, with Lily Miyazaki, Christie Brigante and Ann Selim all just a game away from a victory.
Miyazaki represents Oklahoma in the ITA singles rankings, clocking in at No. 30. The junior is 11-4 on court one, with all of her victories in straight sets.
The Sooners’ freshman tandem of Julie Byrne and Ann Selim continue to play beyond their years, with Byrne matching Miyazaki’s 11-4 singles record, while Selim has posted a 10-4 mark on the year.
Malene Stripp and Byrne are also ranked No. 78 nationally, compiling a 7-3 record in the top flight in doubles.
Scouting the Cyclones
Iowa State (15-8, 1-6 Big 12) enters Friday night’s matchup following a 4-0 loss at TCU on April 9. The Cyclones have dropped their last six matches during conference play.
Prior to Big 12 action, ISU had a 12-match winning streak, where it shutout seven of its opponents. The Cyclones’ last win was a 4-0 rout of UTEP in El Paso on March 17.
Samantha Budai leads the Cyclones at No. 1 singles with a 7-4 overall record. Regina Espindola is 12-4 between courts two, three and four.
At No. 1 doubles, Budai and Maty Cancini are 11-6 together on the year.
In their last meeting, Oklahoma downed Iowa State, 4-0, in Norman on March 18, 2016.
OU leads the all-time series with Iowa State, 17-1. The Sooners hold a 15-match winning streak against the Cyclones with their last loss coming in 2001 in Ames.
Scouting the Mountaineers
West Virginia (4-13, 0-7 Big 12) comes into the contest on an eight-match losing streak, dropping their last match, 4-0, against then-No. 5 Texas Tech on April 9.
The Mountaineers’ last win was a 4-3 defeat of Marshall on February 19. WVU will face Oklahoma State Friday at 5 p.m. before hosting the Sooners Sunday.
In singles play, Habiba Shaker is 8-5 on the season with a 1-2 record against Big 12 opponents on court one. WVU's Paula Goetza and Yvon Martinez have compiled a 4-2 doubles record.
The teams last met on April 28, 2016 at the Big 12 Championships, where the Sooners defeated the Mountainers, 4-0, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Oklahoma leads the all-time series, 6-0.
