NORMAN — The No. 11 Oklahoma men’s golf team claimed third place at the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, Ga. The single-day, 36-hole tournament took place at the par-72, 6,917-yard Athens Country Club.
The Sooners finished with a 36-hole 568 (-8), posting a 280 (-8) in the first round and a 288 (E) in the second.
“We had a chance today to put together a nice tournament,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “It didn't happen like we would have liked, but I saw some guys fight tough today all the way until the end.”
Lipscomb University won the team title with an overall 564 (-12). Florida State finished second, one stroke ahead of OU. No. 25 Arkansas took fourth at 571 (-5), and Kennesaw State rounded out the top five, two strokes behind the Razorbacks.
Senior Max McGreevy was the Sooners’ best finisher, earning a share of eighth with a 36-hole 141 (-3). The Edmond, Okla., native fired six birdies en route to a 68 (-4) in the first round, the 30th round in the 60s of his career. He then shot a 73 (+1) in the afternoon to earn the fourth top-10 placing of his season and the 15th of his career.
Juniors Grant Hirschman and Rylee Reinertson tied for 12th place, one stroke behind McGreevy. Hirschman recorded the 15th round in the 60s of his career with a 69 (-3) in the first round before tallying a 73 (+1) in the second. His placing is the fourth top-20 finish of his season and 19th of his career. Reinertson earned the best finish of his career and his second career top-20 finish by posting a 72 (E) and 70 (-2), respectively.
Sophomore Blaine Hale finished with an overall 146 (+2) and a piece of 25th place. He carded a 74 (+2) and a 72 (E), respectively, on the day, collecting an eagle on the par-5 10th hole in the second round.
Classmate Brad Dalke rounded out the Sooner lineup, tying for 30th, one stroke behind Hale. Dalke totaled 71 (-1) in the first round and 76 (+4) in the second.
Freshmen Garett Reband and Riley Casey competed as individuals and were unattached from team scoring. Reband tied with Hale for 25th place, also shooting a 74 (+2) and a 72 (E). Additionally, he pocketed an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole.
Casey finished in a tie for 65th at 156 (+12) overall. After ending the first round with an 82 (+10), the freshman bounced back to tally a 74 (+2), aided by a 10th-hole eagle.
The Sooners will return to action in one week at the Lone Star Invitational, held March 20-21 (Monday-Tuesday) in San Antonio, Texas.
