Sooners Earn Pair of Wins on Opening Day
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The No. 4/4 Oklahoma softball team opened the 2019 season with a pair of wins, defeating Syracuse 6-0 and Grand Canyon 7-1 on Friday.
Mariah Lopez was exceptional in the season opener, allowing just one hit in her second career shutout. She fanned a career-high 12 batters, marking her second career game with double-digit strikeouts.
At the plate, Lynnsie Elam went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, good for the first multiple-hit and multiple-RBI performance of her career. Grace Green also finished with a pair of hits, adding a run and an RBI.
The Sooners opened scoring in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with a Falepolima Aviu double and a pair of walks. Raegan Rogers capitalized on the opportunity, singling to drive in Aviu.
In the top of the sixth, an error in right field gave Rogers the space to run home from first.
The next inning, Green laid down an infield single that drove in Jocelyn Alo from third. After a walk loaded the bases, Elam laced a double to right center that drove in all three baserunners.
In game two, Grand Canyon struck first with a solo home run by Savannah Tourville in the bottom of the first.
After the next three innings were scoreless, the Sooners responded with a six-run fifth. Caleigh Clifton and Sydney Romero both drove in one run with singles to left field. Then, Aviu singled to right to drive in Clifton and Romero.
Green drew a walk before Eliyah Flores drilled a double to dead center, plating Aviu and Green.
Caleigh Clifton hit OU’s first home run of the season in the top of the seventh to extend the Sooner lead to six.
Junior transfers Giselle Juarez and Shannon Saile made their debuts in the Crimson and Cream against Grand Canyon, combining in the circle. Juarez threw the first 4.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three. Saile closed the final 3.0 frames, fanning six batters and scattering two hits.
Alo and Romero both finished the second game 3-for-4, while Clifton was 2-for-4.
The Sooners continue the season-opening GCU Kickoff Tournament on Saturday with a pair of games against Charlotte (10 a.m. CT) and Syracuse (3 p.m. CT).
