OU Opens Season with Saturday Doubleheader
NORMAN – The Oklahoma women’s tennis team is slated to open the 2019 season Saturday when it welcomes SMU and Oral Roberts to the Headington Family Tennis Center. The Sooners will clash with SMU at 10 a.m. CT, followed by Oral Roberts at 4 p.m.
“We are very excited to finally have the opportunity to compete,” said head coach Audra Cohen, who enters her third year with the Sooners. “This team’s maturity is impressive. They continuously work hard and maintain a big picture perspective about their overall growth. They are ready for the first of many opportunities they will have this season to compete for OU.”
The Sooners return six players from the 2018 roster in sophomores Martina Capurro, Camila Romero, Skyler Miller and Nina Jabrzemski, as well as juniors Sasha Korashvili and Jasmine Asghar. Joining the roster are Ivana Corley (Albuquerque, N.M.), Kiana Motosono (Miami, Fla.), and Laura Rico-Garcia (Bogotá, Colombia).
All of OU’s newcomers participated in the fall slate, where Oklahoma saw success. In doubles, Asghar and Corley made the quarterfinals or better in every tournament they played, including a finals appearance at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The duo also went 3-1 against nationally ranked opponents and made a run at the ITA All-American.
Capurro and Romero also recorded a finish in the quarterfinals or better in every tournament, and brought home the Flight Two title at the Marliss Gruver Memorial Tournament. The pair also went undefeated at the Kitty Harrison Invitational to close out the fall on a five-match winning streak.
In singles, Capurro led the Sooners with 10 singles wins, with three of those against nationally-ranked opponents. The sophomore made a run to the round of 16 or better in every tournament she participated in.
Romero won a singles title at the Marliss Gruver Memorial Tournament, while Asghar went undefeated against ranked opponents.
OU is also joined by volunteer assistant Jose Gracia, who spent his collegiate career at Florida State. Gracia carved his name into the record books at FSU, ranking sixth all-time in career doubles wins with 83 as well as sixth all-time in combined wins with 163.
Oklahoma compiled a 15-12 record in 2018 with a 4-5 mark in Big 12 action.
OU’s signature win of the season came over then-No. 40 NC State. Then unranked, OU defeated the Wolfpack in a 4-3 thriller at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The contest came down to court two, where Asghar clinched the match for the Sooners in a three-set victory.
The Sooners’ Lily Miyazaki earned her second NCAA singles bid, becoming just the second-ever OU player to make multiple tournament appearances.
First serve against SMU is set for 10 a.m. CT. The Oral Roberts match is set to begin at 4 p.m. CT. Free pizza will be provided at the Oral Roberts match, while supplies last. Fans can also pick up a copy of the 2019 poster.
OU Athletics has introduced a clear bag policy and walk-through metal detectors at all home events this season. More information on the policy and procedures can be found here.
