Fayetteville, Ark.- Maggie Nichols scored the first perfect 10 of the 2019 season and the No. 2 Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team opened the year with a statement victory, downing No. 12 Arkansas 198.050-195.575.

Nichols now has five perfect 10s on vault and 16 in her career, earning the Sooners’ 40th perfect score in program history. Nichols won the event title on vault, beam (9.975) and the all-around (39.750) while senior Nicole Lehrmann took the top spot on bars with a 9.95 and freshman Olivia Trautman took home a share of floor with a 9.95. Brenna Dowell made her beam and all-around debut, posting a 39.550 in the all-around for second place.

The Sooners are the first team since at least 1997 to post a score of 198 or better in an opening meet. It tops the program record of 197.750 set in 2017 when the Sooners opened at home against Alabama. The 198.050 also marked the 19th time in the last four seasons that OU has posted a score of 198 or better.

Starting the meet on bars, the Sooners came out strong by posting the highest score in the nation on the event with a 49.475. Senior Nicole Lehrmann, the 2017 National Champion on the event, looked in midseason form as she won the event title with a 9.950.

Nichols and senior Brenna Dowell each added a 9.9. Leading off on the first of three events, sophomore Bre Showers posted a 9.825, while Alex Marks nailed a career high 9.850. Sophomore Anastasia Webb notched a 9.875.

Vault was where the Sooners excelled, firing on all cylinders in a rotation highlighted by Nichols’ 10.0. OU sent up five 10.0 start values and saw at least a 9.9 from four athletes. Showers set the stage, leading off with a 9.875 on her Yurchenko full. Lehrmann debuted an upgraded vault, a Yurchenko 1.5, for her senior season, tying her career high with a 9.9.

Freshman Olivia Trautman made her collegiate debut posting a 9.850 and junior Jade Degouveia set a career high with a 9.95. Anchoring was the 2018 NCAA Vault Champion, Dowell, who notched a 9.900.

Trautman was the shining star on floor, showing why she’s the anchor with an incredible routine for a team-high 9.950 that included a 10.0 from one judge. Trautman opened with a gorgeous stuck double layout and ended by nailing her double tuck.

Nichols and Dowell posted matching 9.875s and Webb added a 9.850 of her own. In her first time back on floor after injury, Degouveia tallied a 9.825 in the No. 2 spot.

Closing the meet on beam, the Sooners posted the top score in the country with a 49.575. Trautman and Lehrmann opened with identical 9.9s. Lehrmann finished the meet with at least a 9.9 on all three of her events. Back in the lineup for the first time since mid-last season, sophomore Carly Woodard was gorgeous in the No. 3 spot for a 9.875.

Making her beam debut, Dowell shined for a 9.875. Webb added a 9.925 in the No. 5 spot, while Nichols anchored with a near-perfect routine for a 9.975.

Next weekend, the Sooners return to the friendly confines of Lloyd Noble Center for their home opener. OU will welcome powerhouse Georgia to the LNC for a Friday evening matchup. The meet is set for a 6:45 p.m. CT start.

Tickets are available for purchase online or by calling the OU Athletics Tickets Office at (405) 325-2424 or toll-free at (800) 456-GoOU.
